Do what you love first

Frustrated with my job search, I came across this article on the Harvard Business Publishing website. I found it quite refreshing.

Do what you love first. Everything will come later. On the dimensions of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, do what you love first. The reason why this works is because people buy the person selling, not the product. This is true for just about anything because people buy anything that is of value -- which is to say anything that will satisfy a need or a desire. The most infectious of these are the ones that generate the most pleasure and take away the most pain, ie recreational drugs.

Thus, you are always in the business of selling and public relations, whether you choose it or not. Come time for the job interview, anyone can get the skills if the skill alone mattered.  Instead employers and recruiters buy into the candidate's personality which can improve probability of success much more.

Jacque Fresco said that the greatest influence to bring about behavioral change is the environment. If you're in an environment of fear, you will become neurotic and depressed. If you're in an environment of pleasure and satisfaction, you will be beaming with positive energy such that others will have to notice.

Buddhists say that people are unhappy only when they are not in their rightful place.  As the common adage goes, "it's not what you know, it's who you know".   Then being around people who share common passions, both positive or negative, is your rightful place.  You are happier and they are happier and a sense of belonging develops. Being an effective contributing member of a community fosters your self-actualization and esteem. These are all positive attributes to Maslow's heirarchy of needs.

So in the end, be brave and take your life into your own hands. Have courage to always do what you love, and share that passion with others.
